WOMEN AND GIRLS

  • The ways women are subject to oppression are through lack of equal pay, types of jobs, male power, body image, affordable childcare, and access to safe, legal, affordable abortion and birth control.
  • According to some studies, 1 in 3 women has been a victim of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner, and one in six will be the victim of an attempted or completed rape.
  • The Family Medical Leave Act provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, but fewer than 40% of workers qualify for it.
  • Women are also 51% of the population, but make up only 19% of Congress and 25% of state legislatures - despite the fact that they have different legislative priorities than men, and are more likely to introduce bills addressing the needs of women and children.
